180명 구조, 75명 입양 완료 

작년 3월 초 울진에 매우 큰 산불이 발생했습니다
화마라는 표현이 딱 맞았던 그런 산불이었습니다.
꺼질 줄 모르던 산불은 결국 한 달이나 이어졌습니다.
다행히 인명 피해는 없었지만 동물들은 많은 피해를 입었습니다.

케어 와치독 여성 활동가 2명은 울진 산불이 난 당일, 울진에 도착해 마을 일대를 돌아다니며 불타기 직전, 위급한 동물들을 탈출시켰습니다. 활동가들의 얼굴에 몸에 검은 재가 뒤덮일 정도로 정신없던 시간, 이틀이 지난 후 너무나 끔찍한 주검들과 살아남은 개들이 뒤엉킨 도살장을 발견했습니다. 10구의 사체, 살아남아 화상을 입은 10명의 누렁이를 포함, 150명의 개들이 울부짖고 있었고 이틀간 그대로 굶고 있었습니다.

그때부터였습니다. 이들을 외면할 수 없어 화상입은 개들을 빼내 치료하고 불 타 죽은 개들의 장례를 치러주고, 살아남은 개들에게 밥과 물을 준 긴 긴 시간. 물도 나오지 않는 그곳에 남은 재난동물에 대해 정부도 울진군청도 사료 한 톨, 생수 한 병을 주지 않았습니다.

그렇게 그 도살장 자리에서 개들을 챙긴 시간이 어느덧 10개월. 개들을 포기했던 도살자는 개들이 욕심나 돌변했고 소송을 걸어 왔습니다. 포기각서가 무효하다는 것이었습니다.
그도 그럴 것이 개들은 고기로 팔려나가는 몸값이 한 명에 30-40만원 . 거의 6천만원의 비용이었으니까요.

그래서 탈출시켰습니다. 이른 새벽같이 울진에 모인 활동가들은 긴박하게 움직여 누렁이 모두를 탈출시켰고 급하게 마련한 임시공간으로 옮겼습니다.

그러나 그곳도 뜬장이었습니다. 단 한 번도 운영하지 않고 폐업하게 된 뜬장, 결국 다시 개농장 자리로 가서 수개월을 다시 버틴 우리 울진의 누렁이들이 이제 뜬장을 그만 나와야 합니다.

상태가 점점 나빠지고 있기에 이제 영원한 안식처로 가야 합니다. 견사비만 있으면 뜬장이 아닌 곳으로 하나하나 갈 수 있습니다.

In March last year, a catastrophic wildfire swept through Uljin, raging for an entire month. While no human lives were lost, animals in the region suffered tremendously. 

On that fateful day, two dedicated activists from CARE and Watchdog arrived in Uljin, tirelessly traversing the village to save animals on the verge of being engulfed by the flames. As they embarked on their second day of intense rescue efforts, coated in black ash, they stumbled upon a horrifying scene: a slaughterhouse filled with a mix of dead and surviving dogs. Ten lifeless bodies and 150 desperate dogs, including 10 with burns, cried out for help, starving and neglected.

We couldn't abandon these innocent creatures. We treated the injured, held funerals for the deceased, and provided food and water to the survivors, a commitment that continues today. Neither the government nor Uljin County Office provided any pet food or even a single bottle of water for these disaster-damaged animals.

After ten months of unwavering care at the slaughterhouse site, the dog butcher who initially abandoned the dogs filed a lawsuit against us, claiming the abandonment statement was void. From his perspective, he could profit 60 million won by selling each dog for meat at 300,000 to 400,000 won per animal.

With no other choice, we covertly evacuated the dogs. In the early hours of the morning, our compassionate activists convened in Uljin, executing a swift and urgent operation to rescue all the dogs and relocate them to a temporary, makeshift shelter. However, this new location was nothing more than an inoperative and abandoned dog farm. Consequently, the dogs were forced to continue their lives in hanging wire cages. Over the ensuing months, their condition steadily deteriorated.

Now, it's time for these dogs to find solace in a true sanctuary. As soon as we secure the necessary funds to establish kennels, we will relocate them one by one. We implore you for your assistance. Please lend your support to the dogs of Uljin.
